Dry Shampoo Recipe

1/4 cup arrowroot powder

2 tblsp of cacao powder (or more to color it darker)

10 drops of Young Living Essential Oil (I used Cedarwood, Lavender, and Ylang Ylang)

Mix oils and arrowroot together. Add in cacao powder for coloring. Place in a salt shaker type jar or mason jar. Sprinkle on scalp and rub in or apply with a make up brush to scalp and comb through hair.

I also added all these dry shampoo ingredients into a glass spray bottle so I can have the same goodness in spray form. Here's the down low on that.

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup vodka, rubbing alcohol or witch hazel
  • Young Living Essential Oils of your choice

Mix all ingredients in a small spray bottle and shake well. Shake before each use and spray on roots or oily parts of hair. Let dry and style as usual.

If I'm being honest, day two or three hair is the best.

I only wash my hair twice a week. Once I wash my hair it has no texture and is flat. I don't really enjoy hairspray or gel so I pretty much have two styles...down or up. I love rocking a high pony tail but what I super love is a big fast messy bun. I love big buns.

Dry shampoo is my saving grace. Going to be real here, it is *so* nice spraying in dry shampoo and showering without washing your hair. Saves time. This is a totally win for mom life hood.

Dry shampoo adds an incredible texture to my hair which helps with styling AND it absorbs some of the natural oils my hair puts off. I love being oily, but not necessarily my hair.

Here's the thing. I knew the store bought dry shampoo I was using was full of chemicals, but I loved it and kept using it anyway. Totally guilty. This past week I decided enough was enough. The chemical laden dry shampoo I was using was coming into direct contact with my scalp, which sat there for days meaning the chemicals it contained were sitting on my scalp and adsorbing into my blood stream.  EEK. Here is what I was spraying onto my head:

1) Fragrance: this is a known human immune toxicant and possibly a human respiratory irritant. Fragrance has been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.

2) Talc: this acts as an absorbent in dry shampoo; it’s a powdered native, hydrous magnesium silicate that may have asbestos fibers in it, which poses a risk for respiratory toxicity and may cause unnatural cell growth.

3) Parabens: these are a fragrance ingredient and a preservative. It mimics estrogen, acting as a potential hormone system disruptor. You’ll find parabens in many products labeled all natural and organic.

4) Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Dry shampoos commonly come in a spray-on, aerosol container. These cans have a propellant to force the dry shampoo out. The question is what’s in LPG? Butane, propane, and isobutane. These are colorless, odorless gasses. "Propane takes the place of oxygen in the lungs, which can effect breathing negatively. It has also been found that these gases are linked to headaches, mood swings, nausea. Which, I was totally getting more headaches AND nausea after using my dry shampoo for almost 3 years.

YIKES, right?

The natural dry shampoo recipe I provided above...ya'll it works amazing.  It smells AMAZING. AND guess what? NO CHEMICALS! The best part are the benefits I am getting from the essential oils. Cedarwood essential oil is high in the chemical compound sesquiterpene which helps bring oxygen to my hair follicles (promotes hair growth) and brain (promotes mental clarity and brain function). The ylang ylang is great to support my hair and its natural shine. Historically, women have used ylang ylang for it's beauty benefits (skin and hair) and hormones. Lastly, I chose lavender because it is so great for your nervous system.

Listen. If I can switch out chemical laden products so can you. Instead of using hormone distributor, repository and nervous system damaging products I chose to take my health back into my hands and whipped up this super easy dry shampoo recipe that contains oils in it which support my hormones, respiratory and nervous system instead of disrupting them!! WINNING. Take control of your health. Know what you are putting on your body. Want to learn more on how you can do this? I am here to help!
